Definition

The cookies are scraps of texts (letters or numbers) that allows to the web server to memorize the client (browser) information obtained during the visit on the site (session cookies) or then, also a few days later (enduring cookie).  The cookies are memorized, according to the preference of the user, from the single browser on the specific device used (pc, tablet, smartphone).

Similar technologies, such as web beacon, transparent GIFs and all forms of local storage introduced with HTML5, are also usable to collect information on the user’s behavior or on the use of the services.

In the rest of the document it will be used just the word “cookie” for the cookies and the total technologies.

Typologies of cookies

According to the characteristics and the use of the cookies it is possible to recognize different classes:

Strictly necessary cookie

These are cookie essential for the correct use of the site and used to organize the login and the access on the reserved functions of the site (if the user is registered). The duration of the cookie is strictly limited at the working session (they are deleted when the browser is closed). The public pages are visualized also for users that are not registered.

Analysis and Performance cookie

These are cookie used to assemble and analyze the traffic and the use of the site anonymously. These cookies, without the identification of the user, allow, for example, to reveal if the same user returns to connects in different moments. Moreover, they allow to control the system and to improve the performances and the usability. The deactivation of this cookie can be carried out without any loss of functionality.

Profiling cookie

These are permanent cookies used to identify (in an anonymous mode or not) the user’s preference and to improve its experience of navigation. This site does not use this type of cookies.

Third-party cookie

Visitors to a web site are able to receive cookie both from the visited site (“proprietary”) and from sites managed by different organizations (“third party”). A considerable example is represented by the presence of “social plugin” for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ e LinkedIn. It concerns parts of visited pages directly generated from these sites and integrated in the page of hosting site. The more common use of social plugin is finalized to sharing the content on the social network.

The presence of this plugin involves the transferring of cookie from and to sites organized by third parties. Google Analytics

This site also includes some components transmitted by Google Analytics, a web traffic analysis service provided by Google , Inc (“Google”). This also involves third party cookies collected and managed anonymously to evaluate and improve the performance of the host site (performance cookies).

Google Analytics uses the cookies for the anonymous collection and analysis of the information on the behavior of users (including the user’s IP address). This information is collected by Google Analytics and processed for the purpose of preparing reports for the webmasters about the activity on the web site. This site does not use (and does not allow third parties to use) the Google Analytics tool to monitor or collect personal identification information. Google does not associate the IP address with any other data possessed by Google or seeks to connect an IP address with the identity of a user. Google may also communicated these information to third parties where this is required by law or where such third parties handle the aforesaid information on Google’s behalf.

Cookie Duration

Some cookies (session cookies) remain active only until the browser is closed or the logout command is given. Other cookies “survive” after the closing of the browser and are also available in following visits of the user.

These cookies are called persistent and their duration is fixed by the server in the moment of their creation. In some cases a time limit is set, in other cases the duration is unlimited.
